Winning the "tell me about a time" round

Behavioural rounds sink more offers than people expect. Here is the STAR method, the questions to prepare, and how to frame each one.

Behavioural rounds decide more offers than candidates expect — a strong technical loop can still be sunk by vague, rambling "tell me about a time" answers. The fix is a repeatable structure and a small bank of prepared stories.

The STAR method

Every behavioural answer follows four beats:

  • Situation — one sentence of context. Where, when, what was at stake.
  • Task — your specific responsibility in it.
  • Action — what you did (not "we"), the decisions and trade-offs. This is 60% of a good answer.
  • Result — the outcome, quantified wherever possible ("cut regression time from 6 hours to 40 minutes").

Prepare six to eight stories covering leadership, conflict, failure, ownership and impact — then map them to whatever question comes up. Amazon tests its Leadership Principles explicitly; Atlassian and others probe values in the same way.

✍️ Write your own STAR storiesThe frameworks above are the scaffold — the stories must be yours. For each, write a real 4-sentence STAR answer from your own work and rehearse it out loud. Keep your strongest, most personal examples for the interview itself rather than publishing them, so an interviewer never reads your answer before you give it.

Rehearse under pressure

Behavioural questions are in the mock interview mix.

Frequently asked questions

What is the STAR method?

A structure for behavioural answers: Situation, Task, Action, Result. It keeps your answer focused and ensures you cover the outcome, which candidates often forget.

How many stories should I prepare?

Six to eight, covering leadership, conflict, failure, ownership and measurable impact. Map them to whatever question comes up rather than scripting per question.

How do I answer Amazon Leadership Principle questions?

Pick the principle the question targets, tell a real STAR story that demonstrates it, and quantify the result. Amazon explicitly evaluates against its Leadership Principles.

What is the most common behavioural mistake?

Saying "we" instead of "I", and skipping the result. Interviewers want your specific actions and the measurable outcome.

Company values and Leadership Principles are stable; refresh the exact list for your target company before the interview.
