Common Questions
Roadmap FAQs
The questions every QA professional has before starting this journey.
⏱️How long does it take to become a Senior SDET?
Realistically 2–3 years of deliberate practice if you follow this roadmap consistently. 6 months to Junior, 12–18 months to Mid-Level, 2–3 years to Senior. The variance is entirely driven by depth of practice — building real frameworks, not just watching tutorials.
☕Java or Python — which should I learn first?
Java for Indian product companies and MNCs (Selenium ecosystem, Spring Boot backends to test). Python for startups, Swiggy/Zomato/data-heavy teams. Most job postings at Amazon/Flipkart/Atlassian expect Java. If targeting both: Java first, Python second — the OOP concepts transfer instantly.
🔌Is API testing more important than UI automation in 2026?
Yes — API testing is now expected at every level, even Junior. The industry has shifted toward microservices and headless architectures. 100% of SDET job postings from the 16 companies in our interview guide mention REST API testing. Learn it alongside Selenium, not after.
🚀Do I need CI/CD knowledge to get hired?
For Mid-Level and above: absolutely yes. Interviewers ask "where do your tests run?" If you say "I run them locally," you will not pass. Jenkins or GitHub Actions basics are required from Mid-Level. Docker for QA is expected at Senior. Learn CI/CD actively, not passively.
🏗️Should I learn Cypress or Playwright instead of Selenium?
Learn Selenium first — it dominates enterprise job postings (60%+ in India). Then add Playwright (fastest growing, required at Google, Microsoft, startups). Cypress is JavaScript-only and less common in enterprise. The concepts transfer: learn one well and the others take days, not months.
📱Is mobile testing (Appium) mandatory?
For consumer app companies (Swiggy, Paytm, Zomato, PhonePe): strongly preferred. For enterprise/B2B SDETs: nice to have. At the Senior level, having Appium on your resume is a significant differentiator. The investment is ~2 weeks once you know Selenium — the API is nearly identical.
